The EAEO launches its report on the Free Movement of Workers
The East African Employers Organisation (EAEO) launched its report on “An Assessment of the Implementation of the EAC Common Market Protocol Commitments on the Free Movement of Workers”. The launch was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Friday 17 May 2013 and was attended by some 70 people from across the EAC representing government ministries, trade unions and the private sector.
The report noted that although the Common Market Protocol (CMP) empowered the EAC Council of Ministers to issue directives to ensure the harmonisation and progressive implementation of the CMP, many Council Directives and decisions issued had not been enforced. The report highlighted the fact that the CMP guarantees the free movement of skilled workers to the exclusion of the majority of workers who are semi skilled. The report also looked at the cost of work permits across the EAC.
A meeting of the EAEO Technical Committee and Executive Committee also took place at the same time in Dar es Salaam.
